5 TIPS ON HOW TO ENJOY YOUR FITNESS JOURNEY

Often times people ask me how I manage I stay slim. It’s very simple ‘I exercise and eat a balanced diet,’ I always answer. But it’s not very simple for someone who has been battling with weight loss for about 4 years now, not that they were consistent. I remember when I was a personal trainer my clients used to call me and tell me that they want to give up. I then realized that when they start their journey they have high expectations. In this article, I will share 5 simple tips that have helped me and my clients achieve their goals.

SET A SMALL AND ATTAINABLE GOAL FOR YOURSELF.

My teacher always says ‘set smart goals.’

S- Specific

When setting the goal, you have to specify what the goal is, and why you want to achieve it. Often times we just write down 'weight loss' but you haven't specified how much you want to lose and why. This is when we start to think that it's not working.

M- Measurable

You need to be able to quantify your goal. For example, if you said 'weight loss' you have probably then specified to lose '20 pounds' you are able to see your progress. Your goal may be to master a pull-up, run five miles, or go to the gym four days a week, you should have a definite way of knowing when you've reached your goal.

A- Achievable

If you want to wake up in the morning and go for a jog, go for it. However, if you, not a person that usually runs, don't kill yourself. Don't set a 5km run as your first goal, how about you start small maybe 400m till you get to a kilometer or just use a treadmill for at least 10 minutes until you are comfortable and you begin to increase the time. If this is done you won't feel like your goal is impossible to achieve. You should start small and see early wins, which encourages long-term consistency.

R- Relevant

This speaks for itself. Your goal has to be worthwhile. Create a goal with a motivation attached to it. Whether you want to feel confident at a big event or perform better during everyday activities, pinpoint why a goal is important to you. This helps your consistency.

T- Timely

Set a deadline, this creates urgency. It’s important not to set deadlines too far out. If you give yourself four months to lose 10 pounds, that might be too long because you aren’t incentivized to start working at it immediately." I encourage 30-day challenges for weight loss, it gives you determination.

FIND A FITNESS BUDDY

You may love working out in solitude, but you will truly need an accountability buddy at some point on your journey. They will motivate you when you want to give up or when you just feeling lazy to workout.

THINK ABOUT WHY YOU STARTED

Often times we want to give up because we don’t really know why we do certain things. Ask yourself why you are working out. Is it because I was told by a friend or because I want to. When you have narrowed that down and made sure it’s because you want to, trust me life is easier.

BE PATIENT

It’s no secret that results don’t come on the first day off working out. But we let ourselves think that and we become discouraged. Try not to weigh yourself after every workout. Do it after 2 weeks of working out and then you will start to see change.

Implementing these tips can help you enjoy your fitness journey and reach your goals.
